갤러리바톤은 2020년 1월 30일부터 2월 29일까지 독일 작가, 폴린 므바렉(Pauline M’barek,1979)의 영상 작품 <Object ID>(2012)를 상영한다. 

<Object ID>(2012)에서는 오늘날 민족학의 기준으로 물체를 분류 및 규정지을 때 제기되는 표준문항 55개가 보여진다. 이 문항들은 물체의 종류와 재료, 역사에 대한 직접적인 질문이며, 이러한 과학적 분류법을 통해 하나의 민족학적 개체(ethnological object)는 특정 정보의 제공자로서 유래하게 된다. 이는 곧 이전의 자료에서 발견되지 않은 새로운 역사로서 기록됨을 말한다. 비판적 시선이 배제된 표준의 문항들은 언제나 과학적 수집 현상이 그러하듯 상당히 강박적인 특징을 드러내며 근본적으로 물체가 갖는 매개 변수보다 훨씬 더 많은 정보를 끌어내게 된다. 화면 속 질문들은 마치 총성과도 비슷한 타자기 소리와 함께, 어떠한 상상도 거부하며 끊임없이 물체를 규정하려 한다.

폴린 므바렉(Pauline M’barek)은 1979년 독일 퀼른에서 출생, 함부르크 미술아카데미(the Academy of Fine Art, Hambourg), 마르세유 고등조형예술학교(the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Marseille), 퀼른 미디어아트 아카데미(the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne), 베를린 미술대(University of Arts, Berlin)에서 수학하고, 프랑크프루트 미술협회(Frankfurter Kunstverein, 2014), 브뤼셀 익셀미술관(Musée d´Ixelles, 2013) 개인전을 비롯해 베를린 국립미술관(Staatliche Museen Berlin, 2019), 뒤셀도르프 노르트라인 베스트팔렌 미술관(Kunstsammlung NRW, Due-sseldorf, 2019, 2016), 린츠 미술관(Kulturtankstelle Linz, 2019), 브레멘 미술관(Kunsthalle Bremen, 2016), 하노버 미술관(Kunstverein Hannover, 2006) 등에서 그룹전을 개최했다.

Gallery Baton is pleased to screen Pauline M’barek’s <Object ID>(2012) at Observation Deck, Gallery Baton from 30 Jan to 29 Feb, 2020. 

In this video, 55 questions are raised which are necessary to inventory an ethnological object by today‘s scientific standards. In doing so, questions about the object‘s type, the material and about the history are in the focus. By means of those scientific methods of measurement, categorization and classification, the ethnological object originates as a provider of certain informations. It is transcribed with a new history which it didn´t possessed in its former context. At the same time, these apparently harmless questions give much more information about the underlying occidental parameter of object valuation than about the objects themselves. They reveal the quite obsessive character which scientific collectorship is always underlying. The questions, which are highlighted with a typewriter sound - similar to volleys of gunfire - try to identify the object, which constantly defies any imagination.

Pauline M’barek was born in Cologne in 1979. He has studied at the Academy of Fine Art, Hambourg, the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Marseille, the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne and University of Arts, Berlin. He has held solo exhibitions at Frankfurter Kunstverein(2014) and Musée d´Ixelles(2013). He has participated in group exhibitions at Staatliche Museen Berlin(2019); Kunstsammlung NRW, Duesseldorf, (2019, 2016); Kulturtankstelle Linz(2019); Kunsthalle Bremen(2016); Kunstverein Hannover(2006).
