갤러리바톤은 2020 년 7 월 3 일부터 8 월 7 일까지 배윤환 ( Bae Yoon Hwan, b.1983 ) 의 영상 작품 〈 스튜디오 B 로 가는 길 〉 ( 2018 ) 을 상영한다 . 배윤환은 자신이 직간접적으로 겪은 일과 사회문제 , 떠도는 이야기 , 루머 , 정치적 사건 등의 이미지를 은유적이고 익살스럽게 재구성한다 . 또한 외부압력이나 불가항력에 의해 받아들일 수 밖에 없는 다 양한 사건들을 겪는 과정에서 인간이 느끼는 분노 , 지루함 , 조급함 등의 감정등의 내적 갈등을 표현한다 .

〈 스튜디오 B 로 가는 길 〉 ( 2018 ) 은 목탄 , 오일파스텔 , 아크릴 , 펜 등의 재료가 가진 물성이 도드라지는 생생한 필치 의 드로잉과 아상블라쥬 ( assemblage ) 기법으로 제작된 오브제의 역동적인 연출이 돋보이는 스톱모션 애니메이션 기법으로 제작된 작품이다 . 이 작품은 도박장 , 지옥 , 수련장 , 놀이터 , 동굴 등과 같이 변덕스럽게 끊임없이 변화하는 요상한 힘을 발휘하는 스튜디오를 떠나기로 마음 먹은 ‘ B ’가 고민하여 선별한 재료들과 과거에 만들어낸 중요한 마 음덩어리들을 위한 새로운 스튜디오이자 이상향의 장소인 “ B ”로 떠나는 모험 또는 여행을 담은 애니메이션이다 . 이 여정은 새로운 작업을 만들어가는 과정이기도 하며 , 지우기와 덧그리기의 반복을 통해 새겨진 지워진 선의 흔적들 이 보여주듯 수많은 마음덩어리들의 생성과 변형 그리고 이동에 대한 지표이기도 하다 .

배윤환은 챕터투 ( 2019 ) , 두산갤러리 뉴욕 ( 2018 ) , 갤러리바톤 ( 2017 ) , 스페이스오뉴월 ( 2015 ) , 인사미술공간 ( 2014 ) , 스페이스몸미술관 ( 2014 ) , 등에서 개인전을 개최했고 , 경기도미술관 ( 2019 ) , 서울시립미술관 ( 2018 ) , 경남 도립미술관 ( 2016 ) , 소마미술관 ( 2016 ) , 대구미술관 ( 2015 ) , 두산갤러리 ( 2015 ) 등 다양한 단체전에 참여했다 . 두산 갤러리 ( 2018 ) , 챕터투 ( 2016 ) , 서울시립 난지미술창작스튜디오 ( 2016 ) 에서 입주 작가로 활동했으며 , 2014 년 중앙 미술대전 대상을 받으며 동시대 회화 작가 중에서 두각을 나타내고 있다 .

Gallery Baton is pleased to screen Bae Yoon Hwan ’ s 〈 Road to Studio B 〉 ( 2018 ) at Observation Deck, Gallery Baton from 3 July to 7 August, 2020. Bae ’ s pictorial storytelling comes from socio-political issues, fictions, political incidents, uncanny stories and personal experiences. Instead of depicting specific stories, this process allows sporadic and anecdotal tales to naturally develop and weave themselves into the story. He expresses the feelings of anger, boredom, impatience, etc. felt by humans in the process of going through various events that can only be accepted by external pressure or irresistible force, and, moreover, conflict, friction, and self-contradiction with oneself.

〈 Road to Studio B 〉 is produced as a stop motion animation that shows the dynamic presentment of objets made by assemblage technique and an intense drawing of the materiality of charcoal, oil pastel, acrylic, pen, etc. This work is an animation about a road to a space called “ B ” , a new studio ( mind space ) where ‘ B ’ , who is determined to leave a studio that exerts constantly changing strange forces such as a gambling place, hell, training field, playground, and cave, considers and selects the materials that ‘ B ’ needs and important masses of mind he has created in the past. His journey is also a process of creating new work, and is a index of the creation, transformation, and migration of numerous mind masses, as evidenced by the traces of erased lines engraved through the repetition of erasing and drawing.

He has participated in group shows at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Ansan ( 2019 ) ; Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul ( 2018 ) ; Gyeongnam Art Museum, Changwon ( 2016 ) ; Seoul Olympic Museum of Arts, Seoul ( 2016 ) ; Daegu Art Museum, Daegu ( 2015 ) ; DOOSAN Gallery, Seoul ( 2015 ) . He was also selected as a resident artist of DOOSAN Gallery Residency ( 2018 ) , Chapter II Residency ( 2016 ) , SeMA Nanji Residency ( 2016 ) . He has received the Joongang Fine Arts Prize ( 2014 ) .
