갤러리 바톤은 피터 스틱버리(Peter Stichbury, b.1969)의 개인전 ‘Precognitive Sentient Phenomena'을 10월 27일부터 11월 30일까지 압구정동 전시 공간에서 개최한다. 

이번 전시는 특정한 스토리라인과 그와 연계된 인물들의 세심한 묘사로 미국과 오세아니아에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 피터 스틱버리의 신작을 아시아와 국내에 처음 으로 선보이는 전시이다.

스틱버리는 UFO (Unidentified Flying Object, 미확인 비행 물체)라는 정체불명의 우주적 현상에 기초한 일련의 작업을 진행해 왔다. 실체적인 증거 없이 다수의 목격담과 사진 자료가 난무하는 가운데, 오손 웰스(Orson Wells, 1915~1985)의 ‘우주 전쟁(1938)’을 필두로 수많은 TV 드라마와 영화 소재로 활용되면서, UFO는 일반 대중에게 가장 널리 알려진 가설이자 궁금증을 자아내는 불가사의한 현상으로 자리 잡았다.

어린 시절 하늘을 가로지르는 무언가를 목격했던 작가의 경험은 UFO와 연계된 주제를 2014년을 기점으로 본격적으로 다루게 되는 동인으로 작용했고, 2015년 스페인 까사 엔쎈디다 아트센터(La Casa Encendida), 2016 - 2017년 미국 네바다 미술관 (Nevada Museum of Art) 전시를 거치면서 스틱버리를 대표하는 작품의 주제로 확고히 자리 잡게 된다.

'Precognitive Sentient Phenomena' at Gallery Baton's 'Observation Deck'

Gallery Baton is delighted to announce ‘Precognitive Sentient Phenomena’, a solo exhibition by Peter Stichbury (b.1969), from 27th October to 30th November in Apgujeong, Seoul. 

Stichbury has built a loyal audiencein the US and Oceania, his portraits the visual accomplice to his elaborate, exhaustively researched case studies. This exhibition represents the first opportunity for the Asian and Korean audience to discover his work.

“We have seen UFOs as classical spaceships for a long time, in accordance with science fiction in the forties and fifties…. psychic effects reported by witnesses are considered either as evidence of mental weakness or as electromagnetic side effects. Yet, as documentation improves we find out that the physical aspects of the phenomenon are as negotiable as its psychic effects.”
